Art of the Car Concours

June 28

The second annual Art of the Car Concours, featuring a wide variety of vintage, classic and special interest vehicles belonging to Kansas City and Midwest area collectors — will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 28 on the campus of the Kansas City Art Institute, 4415 Warwick Blvd. On view for the first time this year will be vintage motorcycles, race cars and fire trucks.

The cost to attend the concours is $10 per person; students pay $5; and children under 10 years old and faculty, staff and students of the Kansas City Art Institute will be admitted free. Proceeds will benefit the college’s scholarship fund. Attendees will be invited to vote for their favorite vehicles. “People's Choice” ballots will be distributed, and there will be trophies for the top five vote-getters. Corporate sponsors will also be providing trophies for special vehicles.

“Last year’s event persuaded me that fine automobiles are an art form, and we want our students, faculty, alumni and the public to be exposed to the ‘best’ in Kansas City,” said Kathleen Collins, president of KCAI. “The balloting and awards process will help to ensure that this exposure to vehicle art will be interactive, fun and interesting for everyone.”

Marshall V. Miller, a local attorney, car enthusiast and Art Institute supporter who founded the event and serves as its chairman, said he anticipates that more than 100 cars, trucks, and vintage motorcycles will be on display, including several of his own. Assisting are Jim Sfetko, Dave Wirken, Peter Levy and a number of KCAI staff.

Miller said cars that will be exhibited include an 1886 Benz Patentmotorwagen 3-Wheeler; 1903 Curved Dash Oldsmobile; 1912 Indian Motorcycle; 1917 Detroit Electric; 1921 Daniels D-19 Landau Brougham; 1927 Packard 3-43 Super 8 Touring; 1930 Cord L29 Cabriolet; 1932 Pierce Arrow Model 54 Convertible Coupe; 1933 Rolls Royce GBA-33; 1937 Riley Adelphi; 1939 Lincoln Zephyr 4-door Convertible; 1941 Ford Woodie Station Wagon; 1948 Buick Super Convertible; 1949 Harley Davidson Knucklehead 3-Wheeler; 1951 Daimler DB18 Special Sport Convertible Coupe; 1955 Austin Healey 100M; 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing; 1956 Chrysler Imperial; 1957 Morris Minor Convertible; 1958 Fiat Abarth Record Monza Coupe; 1959 Chevrolet Corvette C-1; 1959 Aston Martin DBMK III; 1959 Studebaker Truck; 1960 Cadillac El Dorado Convertible; 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Station Wagon; 1962 Ducati 125 Bronco Motorcycle; 1962 Studebaker Lark Convertible; 1964 AC Cobra 289 Street; 1965 Chevrolet Corvette; 1965 Porsche 904 GTS; 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4; 1967 Pontiac GTO Convertible; 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe; 1969 Fiat 500 Giardiniera; 1974 Ducati Mark 3 350 Motorcycle.
